International Interdisciplinary NO BORDERS project

by Vangelis Legakis

This international interdisciplinary project aims to bridge encounters between dance, music, photography, film, sculpture, conceptual arts and philosophy to create an environment for free expression and creation. The collaborators-participants will focus on channeling their emotions to express themselves by researching and reflecting on the subject matters of borders, identity and cross-cultural communication to identify, eliminate, and within such a collective context, go beyond their own individual limits.

I had the opportunity to participate in this inspiring project in 2013 in Xiamen (China) as a participanta and in 2014 in Tenerife (Spain) as a teacher and facilitator. In this context I created 2 dance videos : ZeroIdentity and Gambling Child.

ZeroIdentity

produced in frame of 2nd International Interdisciplinary
No Borders Project

China - Xiamen- 2013

This video is a result of 3 weeks research in improvisational dance and video editing as a tool, which is choreographing artistic product.

The performers had the task of improvising a short duet, after choosing a principle from a set list. One of the performers in the duets represents a constant , so that changes can be clearly observed. The principles were used as improvisation tools during research. Performers were asked what they missed the most, while being away from home. The unity of the principle and missing the thing or person was what inspired the theme of the improvised duet.Missing somebody or something is strongly connected with the urge to fulfill. The things we miss make us feel comfortable, even though they are not present at the moment.   It is important that we acknowledge this emotion without identifying with it. First impressions do not accurately define one's identity. Perception of identity is built upon the idea of feelings.
